๐งช Understanding N-P-K
Every bottle of plant food has three numbers on the label. This is the **N-P-K ratio**โthe percentage content of the three essential macronutrients your cannabis plant needs to survive and thrive: **Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), and Potassium (K)**.
The key to successful feeding is providing the *right ratio* at the *right time* during the plant's life cycle.
1. Nitrogen (N) - The Growth Engine
๐ฟ Function: Leaf & Stem Growth
Nitrogen is responsible for chlorophyll production and driving vegetative growth. Think of it as the **engine fuel** that builds green leaves and strong branches.
- **Needed Most:** **Vegetative Stage.** You want a high N ratio during this time to maximize plant size before flowering.
- **Deficiency Sign:** **Yellowing of older, lower leaves.** (Chlorosis). The plant pulls Nitrogen from the old growth to feed the new growth.
- **Excess Sign:** Very dark green leaves, shiny, and prone to curling (Nitrogen claw). The plant becomes vulnerable to pests.
2. Phosphorus (P) - The Flower Builder
๐ก Function: Energy Transfer & Flowering
Phosphorus is crucial for converting light energy into usable food. It drives cell division, root development, and, most importantly, **flower (bud) formation and density**.
- **Needed Most:** **Flowering Stage.** You want a high P ratio to maximize bud production and resin.
- **Deficiency Sign:** Dark, deep green leaves that may develop bronze or purple hues on the stems and leaf veins. Slowed flowering and root growth.
- **Excess Sign:** Locks out other nutrients, most commonly Zinc and Copper.
3. Potassium (K) - The Regulator
๐ก๏ธ Function: Immune System & Water Regulation
Potassium is the **regulator** or immune system. It manages water and nutrient movement, helps the plant resist disease and drought, and improves the quality and weight of the final flowers.
- **Needed Most:** **Flowering Stage**, and consistently throughout the plant's life.
- **Deficiency Sign:** Yellowing or browning/burning around the **edges and tips of older leaves.** The tips often look curled or scorched.
- **Excess Sign:** Locks out other nutrients, primarily Calcium and Magnesium, which leads to secondary deficiencies.
โ๏ธ Rottie's Recommended Ratios
While specific nutrient lines vary, here are the general N-P-K profiles you should aim for:
- **Vegetative Stage:** High Nitrogen (N). Look for ratios like 3-1-2 or 4-2-3. (e.g., 20-10-20 NPK)
- **Flowering Stage:** High Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K), low Nitrogen (N). Look for ratios like 1-3-3 or 1-4-5. (e.g., 10-30-30 NPK)
- **Flush Stage:** Pure water, or a very low, balanced ratio.
**Rottie's Pro Tip:** It's almost always safer to underfeed than to overfeed. Nutrient burn (excess) is harder to correct than a mild deficiency. Follow the bottle instructions, but start at half strength!
