You’ve finished the grow—now don't ruin the harvest! Drying and curing is a slow, methodical process that preserves cannabinoids, degrades chlorophyll, and dramatically enhances terpene profiles (flavor and aroma).
1. Post-Harvest Preparation and Environment
Wet Trim vs. Dry Trim
**Wet Trim** (trimming leaves immediately after harvest) is faster but causes buds to dry quicker. **Dry Trim** (trimming after the initial drying) is slower but protects the buds and results in a longer, slower dry, which is generally preferred for quality.
🌡️ The Perfect Drying Environment (The "Slow Dry")
The best drying is a slow dry, taking **7 to 10 days**.
- **Temperature:** Maintain a consistent **60°F to 70°F** (15°C to 21°C).
- **Relative Humidity (RH):** Maintain **55% to 65%**. This is the key range to prevent mold (too high) and a rapid, flavor-killing dry (too low).
- **Airflow:** Use a small oscillating fan to circulate air, but **never** blow air directly onto the buds.
- **Light:** Must be **absolute darkness** to prevent THC from degrading into CBN.
2. Knowing When the Bud Is Ready to Cure
The goal of drying is to remove moisture until the buds have lost about 75% of their weight. The best test is the snap test.
The Snap Test
- Gently test the smallest stems coming off the main branches.
- If the stems bend without snapping, they still have too much moisture.
- If the stems **snap cleanly** when bent, the buds are ready to be jarred and cured.
3. The Curing Process (The Flavor Maker)
Curing is done inside sealed glass jars (or airtight containers) and is essential for developing full flavor and aroma profiles.
- **Jarring:** Place the trimmed, dry buds loosely into airtight glass jars. Fill the jars about **75% full**.
- **First 24 Hours:** Keep the lid sealed. Monitor the buds. If they feel wet or smell strongly of ammonia (a sign of moisture and risk of mold), they need more drying time outside the jar.
- **"Burping" (Weeks 1-2):** Open the lids for **15-30 minutes** several times a day (3-4 times). This releases moisture and replenishes oxygen, fueling the chemical breakdown of harsh chlorophyll.
- **"Burping" (Weeks 3-4):** Reduce burping to once per day. The moisture levels should have stabilized.
- **Long-Term Cure (4+ Weeks):** Burp once or twice a week. Optimal curing lasts **4 to 8 weeks**, but buds can be cured for 6 months or more for exceptional smoothness.
💧 Pro-Tip: Controlling Humidity in the Cure
Use a small hygrometer inside a jar or use a 2-way humidity pack (like Boveda or Integra) set to **58% or 62% RH**. This eliminates guesswork and guarantees perfect moisture for curing.
